Day 8 - Back to Port Au Prince... Safely?

January 2, 2011 - Back to Port Au Prince... Safely?

After a long clinic day yesterday and cooling off in the ocean, a group decided to make the long trek up the hillside to the small village where we held the clinic for church. I asked Kelci if she was taking pictures during the service and she said, "When the pastor started taking pictures, I figured it was okay!"

After church, we spent the rest of the day relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Ile A Vache before we made the treacherous 6 hour bus ride back to Port Au Prince. Although we had a lot of fun on the island and ringing in the new year with some locals, I think all of us were very ready to get back to the city. Some of us said we felt a little guilty getting to stay on such a beautiful island while just a few hours away the people we had been helping were living in tents.

As we made the journey back home through the night, we experienced another terrifying drive as our driver literally RACED down through the mountains towards the city. Kelci sat in front of me and after about an hour of silence she turned to me and said, "Do you feel like we might very well die on this ride?" That set everyone off, we all laughed and banded together on the bus hoping to make it back to Port Au Prince without either running someone over or rolling the crazy thing!

When we got back to the city, we realized it had rained a lot while we were gone and what was once a pot-hole-filled street was now a flooded lake! Never the less, our bus driver got us through the winding mountain roads, through the flooded streets, through all the debris and rubble and no, we didn't roll or run anyone over! :)
